Ohio Senate Bill 56 Targets Ohio Cannabis Home Growers – We Need to Act Now

By Ohio Cannabis Live | February 14, 2025

Ohio cannabis growers, your right to share homegrown cannabis is under attack. Ohio Senate Bill 56 (S.B. 56), introduced by Senator Huffman, aims to ban the sharing of homegrown cannabis, limit home cultivation, and impose new marijuana taxes—directly affecting medical patients, caregivers, and adult-use consumers.

The bill is scheduled for a second hearing on February 18, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the North Hearing Room at the Ohio Statehouse. This is our chance to make our voices heard before lawmakers vote.

How SB 56 Harms Ohio Cannabis Growers

If passed, S.B. 56 will make it illegal to share any homegrown cannabis—even if no money is exchanged. This means you cannot legally give a friend, patient, or caregiver a plant, clone, or flower that you grew.

Other harmful changes in SB 56 include:

  • Banning all public cannabis consumption.

  • Restricting home cultivation to six plants per household, regardless of the number of adults living there.

  • Levying new marijuana taxes, will increase dispensary prices, and limit access.

These restrictions go against what Ohio voters approved when they legalized adult-use cannabis in 2023.

How to Take Action Against SB 56

This bill is moving fast, but we can fight back by taking action:

Attend the Hearing – On February 18, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the North Hearing Room at the Ohio Statehouse. Lawmakers need to see that Ohio cannabis growers and consumers will not be silenced.

Submit Testimony – You can speak out as a proponent, opponent, or interested party. If you want to share your concerns about SB 56, check out this guide on how to prepare testimony: https://www.ohiobar.org/advocacy/advocacy-toolkit/be-your-own-advocate/testifying-in-ohio-house-or-senate-committee/]

Call or Email Your Legislators – Tell your state senator to vote NO on SB 56 and protect Ohio’s cannabis community.

Spread the Word – Share this information with other home growers, medical patients, and cannabis supporters. The more voices we have, the stronger we are.

The Fight to Protect Ohio Cannabis Growers' Rights

Ohio cannabis growers fought hard to legalize home cultivation, and now politicians want to restrict what we do with our plants. SB 56 sets a dangerous precedent—if they can ban sharing cannabis now, what’s next?

The Ohio cannabis community must stand together to stop SB 56 before it becomes law.

Stay informed and take action today. Ohio Cannabis Live will continue tracking this bill and providing updates.
