Once again, Ohio lawmakers are attempting to undermine the will of the people. After voters overwhelmingly approved Issue 2 in 2023, legalizing recreational cannabis, Senate Bill 56, introduced by Sen. Steve Huffman, aims to make sweeping changes that directly contradict what Ohioans voted for.
If passed, this bill will:
Increase the cannabis excise tax from 10% to 15% – A move that will drive up prices for consumers, making legal cannabis less competitive with the black market.
Reduce home grow limits from 12 to 6 plants – Stripping away personal cultivation rights that were guaranteed in the voter-approved law.
Eliminate the social equity and jobs program – A program designed to support those harmed by prohibition, particularly Black and minority communities.
Cap THC levels at 70% – Arbitrarily limiting consumer choice and product diversity.
Cap dispensaries at 350 and require them to sell both adult-use and medical cannabis – Potentially stifling business opportunities and limiting access for both recreational users and medical patients.
Ohioans Voted for Legal Cannabis—Not for Lawmakers to Rewrite the Rules!
This is not about improving the law—it’s about gutting it. Ohio’s cannabis program has already generated nearly $300 million in sales in just a few months, proving that legalization is working. Rather than supporting this economic success, lawmakers want to strip away consumer rights, impose unnecessary restrictions, and funnel cannabis tax revenue into the general fund instead of programs that benefit Ohio communities.
We Must Take Action NOW!
Ohioans need to send a clear message to legislators: We will not stand for this blatant disregard for democracy! Here’s what you can do:
✔️ Call or email your state senator and representative – Demand that they vote against Senate Bill 56 and any efforts to weaken the voter-approved cannabis law. (Find your legislator here)
✔️ Attend hearings and town halls – Show up and make your voice heard. Let lawmakers know we are watching.
✔️ Join cannabis advocacy groups – Organizations like NORML, the Ohio Cannabis Coalition, and other local groups are working to protect our rights.
✔️ Spread the word – Share this information on social media, talk to your friends and family, and make sure people know what’s happening.
We fought hard to legalize cannabis in Ohio. Now we must fight to protect it! Let’s stand together and stop these attacks on our rights!
